| 16 The Duchess 4:30 pm 7:00 pm 9:30 pm While The Duchess treads the now-familiar terrain of the corset-ripper, the costumes look great and Keira Knightley\'s performance is stellar in this subtly feminist, period drama. After PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and ATONEMENT, Keira Knightley continues her reign as the queen of the period film with this 18th-century costume drama. The corset-clad actress stars as Georgiana Spenser, the Duchess of Devonshire. With her marriage to the duke (Ralph Fiennes), Georgiana achieves an impressive level of fame as Britons follow both her clothing style and her political advice. But even celebrity and wealth can\'t act as a salve in her marriage to the boring, boorish duke. When he begins to flaunt his affairs, Georgiana is tempted to return to a teenage crush, Charles Grey (Dominic Cooper of THE HISTORY BOYS), to the anger of her husband and her mother (Charlotte Rampling, SWIMMING POOL). Fiennes\'s portrayal of the duke ranks roughly with his Lord Voldemort on a scale of beastly behavior, but the acclaimed actor manages to give him a level of humanity that far surpasses what he deserves. THE DUCHESS focuses on the lack of power possessed by Georgiana and, in fact, all women of her time, and the duke is the primary agent of her suppression. As she has done with other period films from the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN series to KING ARTHUR, Knightley brings spirit to the role, as well as a regal carriage that perfectly fits the detailed costumes by Michael O\'Connor. Fans of history-based drama--Georgiana was real-life royalty who is found in the genealogy of Princess Diana--will find much to like in this film, which boasts impressive locations, lush costumes, and forbidden love. | 17 Boone Service League's 1st Annual Holiday Market 4:00 pm Boone Service League's 1st Annual Holiday Market 4:00 - 9:00 MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL - Free Admission! 8:30 pm Monday Night Football on the Big Screen! | 18 The Duchess 4:30 pm 7:00 pm 9:30 pm While The Duchess treads the now-familiar terrain of the corset-ripper, the costumes look great and Keira Knightley\'s performance is stellar in this subtly feminist, period drama. After PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and ATONEMENT, Keira Knightley continues her reign as the queen of the period film with this 18th-century costume drama. LIVE MUSIC - Songwriter Showcase - Jay Brown, Liz Brown, Stuart McNair 6:00 pm 6pm - 9pm $5 Jay Brown has been playing music around Boone for longer than he can remember. Founding member of the Highcountry's origininal party band for laid-back people, "Lazybirds," Jay has played his guitar and harmonica around the Carolina mountains in festivals, bars, resaurants, weddings, funerals, fundraisers, private parties, and jam sessions for so long that by now he calls it his job. He has been fortunate to share the stage with some great musicians, such as Doc Watson, Etta Baker, Andy Page, Old crow Medicine Show, and his Dad. In addition to the many CDs that he put out over the years with Lazybirds, he also put out two cds of original music - "Protest songs, folk songs and spirituals" and "In this life," both of which are available at the Boone Bagelry, which in addition to Jay Brown merchandise, also sells good Bagels. Stuart McNair is a singer/songwriter based in Birmingham, AL. His new release, "Growing a Garden", showcases Stuart's rootsy and folksy side, and he will be presenting many of these tunes at the show. He has a history with Gulf Coast music, as well as Country and the music of the Appalachian mountains. He combines these styles to create songs with a uniquely positive and spiritual tone. And he plays multiple instruments, including guitars, harmonicas, accordion, and trumpet. Liz Brown began her professional singing career at the age of 3, performing in a cowgirl costume at her grandparents' gas station in the pine barrens of New Jersey. Liz got her first guitar when she was 14 and taught herself to play from a Joan Baez song book. In the early 70's she moved to San Francisco singing the blues with some of the great Bay Area musicians of the time like Paul Butterfield and Taj Mahal, as well as experimental world music people embracing the San Francisco music scene. Liz heard Betty Carter in a small alleyway club and soon incorporated scat and jazz into the Chicago style blues she was performing at honky tonks and roadhouses. In 1983 Liz moved to the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina and discovered amazing, young musicians attending Appalachian State University and the traditional mountain musicians, like Doc Watson. It was at this musical crossroads that Liz formed the experimental blues band "Liz and the Tomcats." In 1994, she joined the area's best blues/funk/jam band "Chicken Fat Music Company," a high energy crowd favorite among the diverse counter culture thriving in the North Carolina mountains. Mama's Blues was recorded in 1997 to critical acclaim. Liz's released "Borderline" in September, 2006 and just released a country blues/jazz tribute album "Liz Brown Blues." Liz lives in Atlanta and performs up and down the east coast. You can see Liz perform a dozen times, and you will never see the same show twice. In Disney\\\\\\\'s unabashedly silly talking-dog movie BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA, Chloe (voiced by Drew Barrymore), the ridiculously spoiled title pet, is swept away from her comfortable 90210 existence, when the impulsive niece (Piper Perabo) of her wealthy owner (Jamie Lee Curtis) combines dog-sitting with a vacation in Mexico. When Chloe gets lost south of the border, her scrappy Chihuahua admirer, Papi (voiced by George Lopez), embarks on a mission to bring her back home. While Chloe\\\\\\\'s pint-size dog in shining armor searches for his posh crush, she must contend with the rough-and-tumble side of life, learning a few important lessons along the way. Directed by Raja Gosnell, who is no stranger to dog-themed live-action/CGI flicks (see SCOOBY-DOO), CHIHUAHUA is an amusing diversion that is custom-made for canine lovers. Barrymore and Lopez are pitch-perfect in their vocal performances, and they are ably assisted by a bevy of Latino talent, including Andy Garcia, Edward James Olmos, and Cheech Marin. Although the film doesn\\\\\\\'t give its human actors a lot to do, it doesn\\\\\\\'t matter much, since the dogs are the reason for the entire show.
