Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
1:00 pm
9:00 pm
Few journalists have attained the notoriety of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. His legendary status is due as much to his scintillating writing as his outrageous antics. He became a living legend whose persona often overshadowed his work. However, Thompson's steadfast ability to remain true to his convictions created an entirely new style of journalism, dubbed "gonzo," and has solidified his place in history as one of America's most influential writers and rebels. Fueled by a raging libido, Wild Turkey, and superhuman doses of drugs, Thompson was a true iconoclast: goring sacred cows with impunity, hilarity, and a steely-eyed obsession to right wrongs. Focusing on the good doctor's heyday--from 1965 to 1975--the film also includes clips of never-before-seen (and heard) home movies and audiotapes, and passages from unpublished manuscripts. Director Alex Gibney intelligently interviews a broad spectrum of Thompson's peers and paints a three-dimensional portrait that reveals what a larger-than-life icon he was, a man whose actions both attracted and repelled the people closest to him. What's remarkable is how daring he truly was in taking on the establishment and how absent that voice is today. His passing created a void that may never be filled, but Gibney's terrific film, in doing justice to the writer, the legend, and the man, at least helps preserve his legacy. --© Sundance Film Festival

Tell No One

9:30 pm
An intense, well-crafted thriller, Tell No One is equal parts heart-pounding and heart-wrenching. - RT Synopsis

Eight years ago, Margot Beck was murdered by a serial killer. Though the killer has confessed to eight of these murders, he has always denied to be responsible for Margot's death. However, the specific mutilations found on her body seem to remove all doubts over his guilt. Today, Alexandre Beck, her husband, is still deeply psychologically injured by the loss of Margot. He temporarily escapes his memories during the day by immersing himself completely in his work as a pediatrician. Outside of that, only the friendship he has formed with Hélène Perkins saves him from total isolation from the rest of the world. But when two new bodies are uncovered near where Margot's body was discovered, Margot's case is reopened. At the same time, Alexandre receives a strange e-mail with a link to a video-surveillance web-cam and a time at which to watch it... Written by Chevalier Bayard

LIVE MUSIC - Cookies & Cream
10:00 pm
18+, $5
Cookies & Cream
Established in 2007 and birthed from the Winston-Salem hip-hop/jazz/R&B/funk outfit The SoloS Unit, Cookies & Cream is a tantalizing and tangible journey through the best funk, soul, rhythm, blues and groove hits of the 20th and 21st centuries. Its members are decorated musicians, all with their own bands and main projects, and this is their creative release. Not one of their other bands play covers, but some voices are just too good to not use on a classic or two--classics that have an infectious reminiscent quality and make you want to dance. Although a new band, the veteran musicians have already been joined by The Allman Brothers Oteil Burbridge on stage, and played at notable venues all around North Carolina. Oh yeah, and they got a horn section, a mesmerizing singer and one of the most extraordinary keyboardists on the East Coast... but that's a whole other story.

Winston-Salem and Boone are just getting to know the Different Shades of Blues Band, but already a healthy amount of people are arriving regularly to hear it live. The band takes a new look at blues, folk and rock tunes, rearranging them with seem-less transitions and soulful outbursts. The band is primarily based in Winston-Salem, but recently auditioned and added an amazing female vocal/guitar talent from ASU.

Like director Isabel Coixet's previous film MY LIFE WITHOUT ME, ELEGY is consumed by the ideas of love and mortality. But while that film focused on a young protagonist, the hero of this drama is an aging writer and professor played by Ben Kingsley. David Kepesh (Kingsley) is a minor literary celebrity in New York City who shies away from commitment, happy with his casual relationship with a businesswoman (Patricia Clarkson) who is rarely in town. But a date with a stunning grad student named Consuela (Penelope Cruz) surprisingly turns into a long-term romance, changing David from a confident Lothario into a jealous boyfriend. His age and her beauty haunt their romance until David begins to push her away.
